The lively text, colorful design, and eye-catching photos are sure to capture the interest of emergent readers. Pangolinis part of Bearport’s Even Weirder and Cuter series.
The series, Even Weirder and Cuter by Bearport Publishing, has created a series that introduces some of the stranger animals to be found to young readers everywhere. In this particular title, the Pangolin is introduced with the many oddities that make up this creature from its anteater-like tongue, to the hard scales, tiny eyes, long claws, and its ability to roll up into a tight ball for protection. The text is large, simple, and comfortable for new readers yet the information is made accessible by being clear and concise. Fascinating supporting photographs with call outs makes this series a great introduction to nonfiction text features, although the glossary could be a bit more extensive. The only problem of note is that the text does not address the current global issues surrounding the possible extinction of this unusual animal due to human interference, and some may feel that this is far too important to overlook, no matter what the age of the reader is.
