ReviewedIt’s time for takeoff! This new series launches readers into space, where they will explore planets, stars, the sun, and the moon! Simple sentences and sight words guide emerging readers through the text, and a picture glossary explains new terms. Vibrant photos and labels, along with fun features, draw attention to what makes these space objects unique. It’s an out-of-this-world experience!
This out-of-this-world series will excite fans of all things celestial with its succinct texts that present much solid information. Excellent black-and-white and color photos of our skies—even some photographed by NASA cameras on Mars—extend learning. The opening page of each volume features a list of sight words. Some photos of sky and interstellar phenomena include labels that highlight special features and help develop vocabulary, as they clarify the meanings of words that are boldfaced in the texts but aren’t included in the glossary. Texts provide students with plenty of practice reading words with long-vowel sounds. Besides photos, other handsome design elements include colorful chapter headings, dramatic covers, and quirky motifs that reinforce the other-worldly themes. Some of the charts are a bit difficult to read. VERDICT: This eye-catching series on a popular STEM topic will work well in schools and public libraries.
