ReviewedThousands of reptile species call Earth home. Each book in Hello, Reptiles! introduces emergent readers to a specific reptile, detailing its unique behaviors, habitats, and body parts. Vibrant, full-color photos and labels complement the text to show the unique features of each reptile.
Strong visuals and basic facts convey just enough information to engage young learners. Most titles highlight a few key physical features, such as scales or teeth, with photos that show the animal in the wild. Details are sparse, which works for the introductory level. We learn that boa constrictors are big and coral snakes are small and thin for example, but no lengths are given. Many of the large photographs capture the animals in action, from a swimming anaconda to a gecko that has just lost its tail. All titles include images of the reptile hunting prey and then eating it. Alligators, Coral Snakes, and Geckos provide photos and brief information about eggs and young. VERDICT: Fine choices for kids just beginning with nonfiction animal books.
