ReviewedHow many days are in a week? What activities do we do in each season? Each book in this fun series introduces young readers to different aspects of time, and gives concrete examples that will stick with readers and help them learn about this abstract topic. Each book ends with a Let’s Review! activity that makes them think critically about what they just read. It’s About Time include tools for teachers and caregivers as well as introductory nonfiction features such as labels, a table of contents, and an index.
Each volume in these introductions to time concepts for young readers opens with a tips for grown-ups reading with children and a one-page pictorial preview of the book’s contents. Days lists the days of the week with photos of activities one might do on each; Months displays 12 calendar pages, each with the month’s name. The seasons volume provides photos displaying typical weather at each time of year; and the time title offers images of different times of day and solar positions at those times. The text is extremely simple and clear, with one sentence or phrase per page, and the focus remains on what’s relatable for children; for example, the days volume features typical daily school events and kids gathering with their families. The brightly colored photos are helpful and aid in understanding, mostly without the use of words. Some photos also include labels with arrows pointing to details in the photos to clarify word meanings. The cheerful photos also do a fine job reflecting racial and ethnic diversity. VERDICT: The series does well helping the youngest students glean a basic understanding of this foundational concept. Recommended for school libraries and early learning sections in public libraries.
