'Part of the exciting Torque books by Bellwether, the Animal Battles series of 18 books engages elementary readers with hypothetical battles between 2 fierce species that live in a similar habitat. Written mostly at a 3rd – 4th grade reading level, the books focus on the strengths of each animal in defending themselves against predators. The first chapter uses charts and facts to give an overview of the habitat, physical characteristics and size of the two competing animals. The 2nd chapter highlights secret weapons unique to each animal. The 3rd chapter features attack moves the dueling animals employ. The final short chapter concludes with a decision as to which animal would have the advantage in an actual fight. As in all their animal books, Bellwether combines realistic photos and full color pages with interesting text to satisfy kids’ natural curiosity about the animal world.
